We asked it 4 different ways in July 2026 and checked the answers against 66 verifiable security companies around Tampa Bay. The short version: it does not have a settled answer. 57 of them — 86.4% — were never named once. Of the 9 that were, not one was named every time, and 10 of the names it gave us had no business listing we could find at all.
The short answer
There isn't one. Ask an AI assistant who to hire for home security in Tampa and you will get a confident-sounding list, but ask it again in slightly different words and you will get a different list. That is not a quirk we are guessing at — we measured it, and Tampa Bay turned out to have the least settled answer of any of the 34 metro areas we checked.

What we actually did
We wrote down 4 versions of the question a person in Tampa, St. Petersburg or Clearwater would really type when they want a burglar alarm or cameras fitted — the kind of wording that comes out when you are annoyed about a break-in on your street, not the kind a marketer would write. Then we put each one to ChatGPT and wrote down every company name that came back.
Separately we built a list of security companies actually operating in this metro, from business listings rather than from anyone's recommendation. After removing the entries that turned out not to be findable businesses at all, 66 verifiable companies were left. That list is the scoreboard. A company only counts as "named" if the assistant's answer matches a business on it, which is a stricter test than it sounds — plenty of names did not survive it.
What came back
ChatGPT produced 25 distinct company names across the 4 phrasings. Only 9 of them turned out to be real, independently owned businesses with a verifiable local listing.

That second row is the one worth sitting with. Roughly two in five of the names an AI assistant offered a Tampa homeowner could not be matched to a business with a findable listing in this area. If you have ever been given a company name by a chatbot and then failed to find it on a map, that is this, and it is not rare.

In Seattle, WA, the metro at the other end of that table, local companies averaged 3 of 4 — a handful of firms have become the answer there, and they stay the answer however you ask. In Tampa Bay nobody has. For a homeowner that means the AI answer here carries less signal than it does almost anywhere else, and is worth correspondingly less.
Why we are not printing the list of names
We have the list. We are not publishing it, for a reason worth stating plainly: a list of companies an AI mentioned would get read as a ranking of the best security companies in Tampa, and it is nothing of the kind. It measures who is visible to one piece of software, not who does good work.
- A company can be excellent, busy and thirty years old and never be named once.
- A company can be named because its website is wordy, not because its installs are good.
- Some of the names were not companies at all.
Publishing it as a leaderboard would put this site in the same category as the review sites that rank whoever pays them. The counts are the honest part, so the counts are what we publish.
What to do with this instead
Treat an AI answer about local security companies the way you would treat a name from someone at a barbecue: a starting point, not a decision. Then do the two checks the assistant cannot do for you.
- Confirm the company is real and licensed to do alarm work in Florida before anyone comes to the house.
- Get the price in writing, including what happens to the monthly fee after the first year.
- Ask who actually answers when the alarm goes off, and who comes out when the panel fails.
Those three questions eliminate more bad outcomes than any amount of shopping around, and none of them depends on which name a chatbot happened to produce that morning.
